I waited patiently for the Lord;
He inclined to me and heard my cry.
He drew me up from the desolate pit,
out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
making my steps secure.
He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
and put their trust in the Lord.
Psalm 40:1-3
I find this scripture to be beautiful, reassuring, and joyful. It actually gives me great joy to read Psalm 40 in it's entirety. Pastor Adam Donner used this verse several weeks ago when talking about why singing is so important to your worship experience. He said, "sometimes we sing songs that are hard to pray."
I can completely relate to that statement because I have sung many times with a heavy heart, and with great emotion, a song about living my life for Christ no matter what. Those are sometimes scary words to pray, but in a song you can sing with great conviction and heart, and really mean it. Adam also said, "we often times sing songs because some truth touches us."
When I sang "I Will Praise You in This Storm" while in the hospital, I sang with great emotion, and I wanted to praise God, but I was scared. After singing that song over and over, I finally came to sing it with meaning, and I knew that I would absolutely praise God even if he did not reach down and take cancer away. I sang what I believed in the depth of my heart and soul.
I have loved the song "Healing Rain" by Micheal W. Smith. I have sang that song as a prayer for several years, and completely believed that God would work miracles in the homes of my town and beyond. With the latest news regarding the miracle that happened with my liver, this song has become even more emotional and real!
Jon told me that the song "God of Wonders" has always reminded him of his accident on Mount Hood, and the first time he was back in church after the accident. My ultimate favorite song is "Lifesong" because I really want to sign Jesus' name at the end of each day.
If you are feeling deeply sad, scared, defeated... try to sing a new song, given by God, and keep the tune running through your head throughout the day and see if you can come to sing the words with meaning. When you can sing at the top of your lungs one of God's promises put to music, then you have really found the power of being God's child.
Singing for Him,
Sandy
