The Second Purpose of Christmas

Rick Warren's first purpose of Christmas is Celebration. I absolutely love the sounds of Christmas. Yesterday the girls and I baked cookies and did some funny dances to the fun songs of Christmas we had playing on the radio. But it is the songs that declare the glory of God and the miracle of Jesus that I love the most.

The second Purpose of Christmas is Salvation. Salvation is a deliverance from sin, and when we accept the salvation that Jesus brings, then we are truly free to find our purpose. An angel of the Lord declared this wonderful gift on the night that Jesus was born.

"Today...there has been born FOR YOU a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." Luke 2:11

Jesus came for you! He came to be your personal savior. Many people don't think they need God to save them from anything more than hell. Jesus came to be more than just fire insurance. God wants to give freedom from hell, but he also wants to give you purpose and life. He truly is FOR you. He is on your side!

Many people feel that God is secretly out to "get" them - that He is constantly playing a game of "Gotcha!" and just waiting for them to mess up and fail so he can say, "I told you so!" They imagine God as some kind of sadistic cosmic grouch who enjoys frustrating our plans and is always looking for ways to criticize, judge, or get even with us. But God himself says otherwise: "I know the plans I have for you, plans for good and not evil, plans to give you a future and a hope." Rick Warren

If I didn't have salvation, I would not be the person I am today. Truthfully, I would be selfish, materialistic, and jealous of everything others have. I know this to be true because I have fought each one of these sins at some point in my life and had to pray constantly to get myself out of such overwhelming and negative thoughts and feelings. We are our own worst enemy!

Sin is our biggest problem, and it is habit forming. The more we do it, the easier it gets. Our natural inclination is to do things our way instead of God's way. We think we know what is best for ourselves and that we don't need God's help. Prideful attitudes cause us to be disconnect from God. If you feel like God is a million miles away, it is probably because your focus is on you and not Him. Our disconnect from God is at the root of every human problem on earth.

Only God can save us from ourselves. No president, king, doctor, or preacher can do what Jesus did when he fulfilled scripture by being born on that first Christmas night. That child grew up and became our savior by paying the price for our sin on the cross.

We can all have purpose and meaning on this earth when we accept the gift of salvation that comes from Christmas.

Saved by Jesus,
Sandy
