Locks of Love

Michelle had been talking about having her hair cut short for several weeks. Jon and I loved Michelle's long hair, but ultimately it was her decision. I took her to the hair salon, and they mentioned that Michelle's hair was long enough to donate to Locks of Love. It has to be 10 inches long. Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that provides hair to disadvantaged children due to hair loss from any diagnosis. Michelle immediately wanted to donate her hair, even though it meant her hair would be shorter than she originally thought. Michelle looks beautiful with her new and sporty hair cut. It fits her perfectly! Jon and I were very proud that Michelle had a open and giving heart.

Many of you have asked us how the girls are doing, and we have shared some of their questions and moments fear. We are honest and open with the girls about everything, and I think that has ultimately gives them peace. Our girls have learned some real life lessons in this trial we are faced with.

First, they have seen the great compassion of our community and church. Every week day in July the girls were picked up for a play date while I went to radiation. Sometimes they went to someones house they had never been to before because that family wanted to help, and they had offered to watch the girls. We are very grateful to all who helped us by entertaining Rachel and Michelle each afternoon.

Second, our girls see the power of prayer. They have seen how prayer floods our family, and they have confidence in those prayers. We pray each night and they ask for healing. We look at scripture and God's promises, and they have learned that we have a very powerful God.

Third, the girls have learned that they are an important part of our family and that they need to pitch in and help around the house to make things run smoothly and to take the load off of Dad and Mom. This is a really good lesson because Mom (who me?) has probably done too much to make their lives carefree and easy.

My prayer for my girls is that they take these life lessons and use them someday when they are in a tough spot. I hope that Jon and I will have handed down to them a spiritual foundation to get them through the valleys of life. I also hope that they will look back at this time and remember the strength their parents were given through faith and prayer.
