Glenkirk's Women's Bible Study is going through the minor prophets. Last week was the small book of Habakkuk. (who?) He was a prophet to the nation of Judah prior to it's captivity by Babylonia.
Habbakkuk was somewhat critical of God's handling of this situation, and decided to take God to task for His method of dealing with His people. Habbakkuk saw the evil around him, and he cried out for answers.
"O Lord, why must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, 'Violence!' but you do not save?" 1:2
Like Habbakkuk, we cry for answers. We want to know why there is cancer, what did we do to get it. Why is there cheating, violence, perversion, oppression? Why do bad things happen to good people? Why do bad things happen to believers and followers of Him?
In chapter two of this book, God answers Habbakkuk by saying that all wicked will be judged and that righteousness will prevail. The answers to life's question do not always come quickly, but they will come.
In the final chapter, Habbakkuk rejoices in who God is and what He will do. His situation did not change, but he realizes that God is Lord of all. Habbakkuk reaches deep into his soul and accepts that God is God, and at the end of the day, he will trust his Sovereign Lord to be his strength.
"But the righteous will live by his faith." 2:4
It is good to ask God these hard questions. When you question God, you are talking with Him (which is good), and you are acknowledging that He is in control. After you question God, open up your heart and mind to what His answer is. God's Word has many of the answers to our questions.
God has a plan. He wants us to partner with Him in this plan by praying. Whatever is going on in your life, pour out your concerns to God in prayer. Habbakkuk knew that he would need to persevere NO MATTER WHAT.
"Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, thought he olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior." 3:17-18
We need to learn to say, "No matter how bad it gets, I will never stop praying, asking, and being joyful in my Lord. I will not stop until His will is done on earth."
Lord, help me to have the faith I need to not give up on unanswered prayer. I know your ways are perfect. Help me when I am discouraged. - Amen
