Our minister, Jim Miller, gave a wonderful sermon this past Sunday on the religions of the world. The main point was not who was right and who was wrong, but having a clear understanding about what you believe. There are people who like to generalize and say that we all worship the same God, but when you really look at the various religions and compare the characteristics of the God of the Bible to others, there is clearly a difference. Jim asked us to be clear on what we believe, but not force. Be educated, but not judgemental.
There are many great passages in the book of Psalm about the characteristics of God. The one characteristic that is often missing in other religions is the profound love that God has for us. He desires to have a relationship with us because he is our creator and loves everything about us. He promises us that if we walk in His ways and make Him our foundation, he will be our refuge in times of trouble. I came across Psalm 91:14-16 in my reading through the Bible, and I am so glad that I have a God that makes this kind of promise:
Because he loves me," says the Lord, "I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
He will call upon me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.
With long life will I satisfy him
and show him my salvation.
The greatest way that God showed His love for us was to send His son, Jesus, who became the ultimate sacrifice for us to have a sin free path to God. One of the most humbling ways he showed himself to the disciples was by washing their feet. Jesus did this as an example of how we should be. He did a lowly task to show His sacrificial love for us and help us understand how we need to surrender our heart to God. Jesus said these words in John 8:34-36:
Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the son sets you free, you shall be free indeed."
All of this is very important to me, because I have put my hope and faith in the God of Abraham, Moses, David, and the Disciples about my future and my family. The only time I feel fear is when I see my bone scan and the many tumors that cover my spine. But, it only takes 5 seconds to shove that emotion aside and claim that my God is bigger than those tumors, and He has a plan for my life. You are reading His plan.
I have spent my entire life getting to know God, and it was for this moment. I am confident in what I believe. I know the characteristics of my God. I know He has no limits, and his thoughts are not my thoughts. I know He can do immeasurably more than I could ever imagine. I hope you have the same assurance.
God Bless,
Sandy
